The Void

When you move away from someone, is it possible to fill the void you feel with another person, but not replace the old person with this new person? I'm strange, I know. I feel that if you have to leave a person, there is definitely going to be a void inside of you - a feeling that misses being around this person. Is it possible to fill that void without replacing that person?

I think it is. Hubby thinks it isn't. I guess we'll see what happens.

having moved more times than I want to recount, I think you never fill the void of the one you moved away from. You might meet new people who are similar in ways you loved about the original person... but I think the old person is your Barometer-- the yardstick standard by which all others are measured. it goes for friends, loves, pets, teachers...

I miss my bestfriend like crazy, since I came to NYC. But I think the friends I've made here are friends she would like, too.

I worry about changing. I would be so sad if I became somebody she didn't like, because I moved here and it warped me over time...

I like the barometer analogy .. I completely agree that you can't replace people, but at least others can help lessen the loneliness.

Now I have to go think about this changing thing .. hopefully I'll be back in CA before I change too much!

Why does moving mean that you lose somebody? Some of my friendships are face to face, but others are long distance and have remained so for many years. It's harder, but that's what cell phones are for.

Ennis ~ completely agree that you don't 'lose' a person by moving away. Sure, you can talk on the phone, but you can't do those simple things like go shopping, go out to dinner, hang out at a cafe. There's only so much you can do with a cell phone. So, in that sense, you have this time slot void that you have to fill otherwise you'll just be lonely.
